Overview

Sugilite is a relatively rare purple mineral (potassium sodium lithium iron manganese aluminum silicate) first identified in Japan in 1944 and named after its discoverer Ken-ichi Sugi. The commercially significant deposits are in South Africa (the Wessels Mine). With a Mohs hardness of 5.5-6.5, sugilite is moderately durable.

Quality sugilite has a rich deep-purple to magenta color. Gem-grade material is rare and expensive.

Energetically, sugilite is traditionally called the stone of the New Age. It is associated with spiritual protection, heart-chakra healing at a high-vibrational level, and support for highly sensitive people.
