Shungite

Overview

Shungite is a rare, carbon-rich metamorphic rock with a unique molecular structure. It contains fullerenes — soccer-ball-shaped carbon molecules (C60) that were only identified by science in 1985 and earned a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their discoverers. These fullerenes give shungite properties unlike any other stone on earth, including electrical conductivity and demonstrated capacity to interact with water in ways that continue to interest researchers.

Shungite is found in commercially viable quantities in only one place on earth: the Zazhoginskoye deposit near the village of Shunga in Karelia, northwest Russia, from which the stone takes its name. The deposit is estimated to be approximately two billion years old — older than most multicellular life on the planet. With a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4, shungite is relatively soft and has a matte-to-lustrous black appearance.

There are three grades of shungite based on carbon content: Type I (elite or noble shungite, 98% carbon, rare and expensive, highly reflective silver-black); Type II (regular shungite, 50-70% carbon, the most common commercial form); and Type III (lower-carbon shungite rock, below 50% carbon). Elite shungite is the most energetically potent but is extremely rare — most of what is sold commercially is Type II.

Shungite has been used locally in Russia for centuries. Peter the Great established a spa at the shungite deposits in the early 1700s after noticing that water in the area had unusual healing properties. Russian soldiers carried shungite during World War II, and it has been used in Russian water purification for decades.

Energetically, shungite is one of the most actively protective stones in modern practice, with particular emphasis on purification — of water, of electromagnetic environments, and of subtle energy fields.

Spiritual properties

Shungite works primarily through the root chakra, with an unusual quality of grounding that simultaneously purifies rather than simply stabilizing. Its energy is active, cleansing, and distinctively modern in its applications.

Elite shungite placed in water for 24-48 hours is said to charge the water with the stone's properties while also filtering certain contaminants. This practice has scientific basis — studies have demonstrated that shungite can adsorb various organic pollutants and microorganisms from water. Shungite water is a daily practice for many Russian households and has spread globally.

Near Electronics

Place shungite near WiFi routers, on your desk near your computer, next to your bed where you charge your phone, or behind your TV. Small tumbled pieces, pyramids, spheres, and flat rectangles are all popular formats. Larger pieces cover larger fields.

On the Body for EMF Protection

Wear shungite jewelry — pendants, bracelets, or rings — throughout the day, especially if you work around screens for long hours. Phone cases made from shungite or with shungite discs adhered to the back are popular for reducing direct phone exposure.

Shungite Water

The traditional Russian preparation: place elite shungite (Type I) in a glass container of filtered water. Use approximately 100g of shungite per liter of water. Let it infuse for 24-48 hours, then drink. Replace the water daily, and rinse the shungite weekly. Regular shungite (Type II) can also be used but may release more physical particles into the water — elite is preferred for drinking.

Note: consult a healthcare professional before using shungite water medicinally. While safe for most people, it is not a treatment and should not replace medical care.

Bath Water

Add shungite to bath water for full-body energetic cleansing. The stone is safe in water and works well in bath contexts. Pair with Epsom salts (in a separate application — shungite should not sit in salt water long-term) for combined physical and energetic detoxification.

Grounding Meditation

Hold shungite in both hands or place a piece on the root chakra (perineum or just above the pubic bone) while lying down. Breathe slowly into the ground beneath you. Shungite's ancient age makes it particularly potent for meditations on deep time, ancestral lineage, and the continuity of the earth.

Pair with a black or brown candle. Burning cedar, frankincense, or vetiver creates a grounding atmosphere.

Shungite is considered self-cleansing by many practitioners due to its carbon structure and fullerene content — it is one of the few stones sometimes described as not requiring cleansing. However, most practitioners still cleanse it periodically.

Sunlight

Shungite is one of the few stones that thrives in sunlight. Place in direct sun for a few hours to recharge. Unlike amethyst or rose quartz, shungite does not fade.

Running Water

Safe for shungite. Rinse under cool running water to remove physical residue and energetic buildup.

Earth Burial

Bury shungite in soil for 24 hours for deep grounding and cleansing. This returns to source.

Smoke Cleansing

Pass through smoke of white sage, cedar, or juniper.

Sound Cleansing

Singing bowls and bells are effective.

Moonlight

Place under the full moon for gentler recharging.

Note: shungite will leave black residue on surfaces and fingers — this is normal carbon transfer, not degradation. Rinse hands after handling and avoid placing shungite on light-colored fabrics.
