Overview

Andalusite is an aluminum silicate (Al2SiO5) that shows strong pleochroism — different colors in different directions. Chiastolite is the variety with naturally occurring dark carbonaceous cross-shaped inclusions in a cream or pinkish matrix. Major sources include Spain (the namesake Andalusia), Brazil, Russia, and the United States. Mohs 6.5-7.5.

Energetically, andalusite is traditionally called the poor man's alexandrite (due to pleochroism that can mimic color change). Chiastolite is called the cross stone and has long Christian and protective associations.
