Amazonite

Overview

Amazonite is a green to blue-green variety of microcline feldspar, a potassium aluminum silicate mineral with a triclinic crystal system and a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5. Its distinctive color — ranging from pale mint to deep teal — was long attributed to copper, but modern research has shown that lead and water content within the crystal lattice are the primary causes of its vivid hue. Amazonite forms in granite pegmatites and is found in significant deposits across Colorado, Virginia, Brazil, Russia, Madagascar, and Mozambique.

The name evokes the Amazon River, though no amazonite deposits have been confirmed in that region. More likely, the name traces to the green stones traded by Indigenous peoples of the Amazon basin, which early European explorers assumed were the same mineral. Ancient Egyptians prized amazonite deeply — it was carved into amulets, beads, and tablets. A carved amazonite scarab ring was found among the treasures of Tutankhamun's tomb, and the seventh chapter of the Egyptian Book of the Dead was reportedly engraved on amazonite tablets.
